Jorge Casals Offers 5 Tips to Gain WordPress Success: An Expert Interview - Inside WPRiders Article

1. What key skills and qualities do successful WordPress professionals possess, and how can job seekers develop or demonstrate these traits?

Jorge Casals: If we focus on the most successful WordPress professionals I would say that the first quality to look for is WordPress proficiency, a deep understanding of its structure, plugins, functionalities, customization, and maintenance. However, there are different types of WordPress professionals and this will answer the second part of the question.

If the WordPress professional is specialized in Development, a strong web development knowledge is needed. It is important to master or have a strong foundation on Javascript, PHP, HTML and CSS in order to face any technical issues, develop plugins, or even modify themes.

But on the other hand, not everyone inside the WordPress community is a developer, web designers for example are responsible for the overall look and feel of a website. Depending on the role or company, some web designers would also need to face and handle front-end development tasks that may involve JavaScript, HTML and CSS, others may just need to take care of the layout, typography, graphics and imaginanery, meaning that a creative mindset would be the skill to look for and develop when looking for a job in the WordPress ecosystem.

2. Can you share a personal or professional setback you faced in your WordPress career, and how you overcame it? What lessons did you learn from that experience?

Jorge Casals: In early 2022 I launched a SaaS product called Filkers and in order to let our WooCommerce customers know that we existed I had to launch Filkers in the shape of a plugin inside WordPress.org, nevertheless, given our situation back in the day, it was very tough to explain and get our product out there when it was WooCommerce focused and we were just inside the WordPress.org directory. In order to overcome this, we had to make extra marketing efforts outside the WordPress ecosystem, through collaborations and partnerships to get the word out there.

We learned that without a good marketing and communications strategy it is rather difficult to get a WordPress plugin to become popular or very well-known, therefore with DataPocket, our newest SaaS product, we are way more focused on growing through partnerships, media outlets, and digital marketing efforts from the very beginning.

3. What advice do you have for job seekers who feel discouraged or overwhelmed during their job search? How can they stay motivated and maintain a positive mindset?

Jorge Casals: It always depends on what’s your specialty, but I believe that inside the WordPress ecosystem, there are loads of opportunities out there at the moment for developers and web designers. I would say that jobs related to product marketing or more strategic positions are more difficult to find as there are fewer positions available.

WordPress differentiates from other communities because we all give a piece of ourselves in a voluntary way, so if someone ever loses motivation whilst looking for a job or land their next big opportunity, do not hesitate to chat with folks related to WordPress. From my experience, most of the people inside the WordPress community are willing to help!

4. How can job seekers differentiate themselves in a competitive job market? Are there any unique approaches or strategies that you recommend?

Jorge Casals: First things first, without effort there will be no differentiation inside a competitive job market. This means that just creating a CV and a cover letter is probably not enough.

If a professional is looking to differentiate from the rest, the first thing to do is to start developing a strong personal brand, for example, a website or a portfolio with your past experiences and/or examples of things you’ve done in the past. This will start to set you apart from others.

The second step would be to showcase your soft skills, we tend to showcase our educational background and work experience, but, when it comes to reality – Are you good at adapting to sudden challenges? Do you feel you could be a good leader? Do your communication skills need to improve? These are some questions that will prepare job seekers to develop skills that are really necessary on a daily basis.

But of course, demonstrating your soft skills is not enough, continuous learning would be the top strategy that I recommend. Google Ads is a clear example of how, if you don’t stay up to date, in less than one year’s time you will be missing loads of their new features, and the interface will be completely different. Therefore, being proactive in staying up to date with the latest technologies and features from tools and software that are needed on a daily basis, is one of the top approaches that could set you apart from the rest.

5. What are the emerging trends or areas of growth in the WordPress industry, and how can job seekers align themselves with these opportunities?

Jorge Casals: I think we are all seeing that there is a lot of noise going on around Headless WordPress, implementing AI into everything, Hastings and the WordPress Community.

I see a lot of growth potential into supporting the WordPress Community for example – How can we improve WordCamps and its procedures, how can we support newer communities, how can we improve diversity and accessibility into the community…etc. The growth of the community contributes to the continuous evolution of WordPress, with developers and contributors working towards improving the platform.

As mentioned, there is a lot of expected growth in the area of AI, and job seekers that come with knowledge in this area will probably become a top asset for many businesses.

And of course, there is continuous growth in the Managed WordPress hostings with loads of job opportunities.

Other areas that may be of interest for certain job seekers would be security and privacy, eCommerce, or Apps.

Look at our example, DataPocket is an app capable of connecting WordPress and WooCommerce to Canva, Figma and Adobe but we are not strictly part of the community itself. We also connect other technologies, therefore there’s also a lot of growth opportunities in the app ecosystem, integrations and assets that integrate with WordPress from the outside.
